AN UNREQUITED LOVE AFFAIR
My Dearest Moka Express.
Is it me?
An insufferable, hopeless romantic.
Some would argue convincingly …
… Man crushing so shamelessly, the way I do.
THE INDISPUTABLE ALFA ITALIA
In My Modest Cache Of Indispensable Kitchen Gadgetry I Can’t Live Without.
The Moka Express Espresso Maker.
A 2-cupper by Bialetti.
infatuation obsession with this sensuous metal lady, long enamoured by her perfectly proportioned hourglass figure – albeit, ample in the midriff – harkens to the first home-brewed coffee as a young teen.
The call then, as today, was hypnotic, fixating, unbreakable.
CREMA E GUSTO FLIRTATION
Getting All Poetic-Like …
The Cusp Of Morning.
The sun breaks the last of night, rising in a translucent halo of amber and orange, embers lighting the horizon.
At the kitchen window, a breeze slips in, neither warm nor cool.
Comforting as a gentle kiss.
In my pre-dawn sanctuary, I imbibe on the timeless ritual of solitude and tranquility.
As I sit to write.
Sixty-one words to exhibit why I don’t script poetry …
I AM A BARISTA IN BLISS
To sequester the fusion of chocolate, caramel and hazelnut with unfettered affection and reverence.
And, so, I fill the vessel with measured water, filtered, anointed, the elixir awakens.
In an act of Baristical Blasphemy, I … tamp, tamp, tamp … ever so gently, the fine ground espresso beans into the metal basket.
THE BURNER IGNITES
The Room Warms.
Aromatics of ripened fruit and flora in bloom.
Aged tobacco and fresh cut wood.
A whisper builds to a percolating hiss.
Embodied in the malty vapor and faintly bitter air.
My First Espresso Of The Day Awaits.
Pseudo poetic folklore aside, the engineering wizardry of the Moka Express was conceptualized in 1933 by Alfonso Bialetti, Italian entrepreneur and proprietor of the self-named, Alfonso Bialetti & C. Fonderia.
Romanticized notions of an enterprising Bialetti, a man so inspired by a rudimentary predecessor of the modern washing machine – lisciveuse – to create the unequivocally, irrepressible stovetop coffee maker.
It’s as Italian as Vespa and Ferrari and Nonna …
And, less fussy.
Than Spaghetti alla Puttanesca.
ART DECO DESIGN
Designed at the zenith of the Art Deco period, the instantly recognizable silhouette pays homage to the fashionable feminine figures of the day.
Its taut waist beautifully accentuated with a bosomy octagonal upper receptacle (brewed coffee) and shapely lower vessel (water).
The quintessential matrimony of harmony and balance.
Irrefutable form following function.
Symmetrical, precision crafted aluminum.
Signor Bialetti’s engineering gem of simplicity and functional genius, the iconic espresso machine is comprised of a handful of easily stackable and hand-fastened parts – 10 components in all – in a smart size to rest in the palm.
Frugality – ever the willing accomplice to Necessity, partners smartly in the genesis of Innovation – as witnessed by the everyday practicality of the Moka Express.
Hedonistic coffee pleasure doesn’t come any cheaper.
Budget about a dime a serving depending on your espresso beans of choice when home-brewing.
Yes, darling, our good friends at Starbucks know how to turn deliciously high profit margins in brewing Black Gold.
IMPOSSIBLY MORE BEAUTIFUL WITH AGE
After Two Decades Of Unwavering Domestication And Gracious Servitude, My Cherished Moka Express Is Lovingly Broken In.
The once shiny aluminum exoskeleton has seasoned to a dignified patina of bronzed- and charcoal-honed luster.
Wear marks from countless mishaps on the stove, crashes to the kitchen tiled floor, and agitation in the sink and dishwasher, are evident throughout.
It’s survived two near catastrophic firings of an overzealous gas-burner …
And, unexplainably, no fewer than one episode of waterless brewing.
Mea Culpa, Bella.
Its black acrylic handle is disfigured on one side like a Crayon idling too close to a heater.
It wears superficial pitting with pride.
Battle scars like Braveheart war paint.
Tougher than Nonna Nella Cucina with a broken wooden spoon and slipper.
HOW TO MEND A BROKEN HEART?
This Year I Broke Down …
And replaced the rubber gasket, giving some much needed TLC.
The $12 invested in a thrifty 3-pack of replacement gaskets and new metal filter is the best dozen Loonies I’ll spend.
It owes me nothing.
IF YOU’RE THINKING OF AN EARLY BIRTHDAY PRESENT …
Spoiler Alert … I’m Just Floating Ideas …
It’s October 9th, again, this year.
Bialetti makes a half-dozen sizes, from the diminutive 1-cup to mammoth 12-cup versions of the Moka Express.

Unmistakably Italian in Design.

Stout Design With Distinct Handle And Thumb Grip.
It’s lower vessel is reminiscent of Elephant feet an 8-sided scalloped base design.
STAINLESS POTS: KITTY, MUSE + VENUS
Bialetti’s Classic Elegance Refined In Sleek Contemporary Designs.

FUN FACT CONFESSION
I’d Drink A Lot More Espresso If I Could Watch A Second Sunrise Every Morning.
Or, retire today.
Espresso in the afternoon or late night has its place.
After a satisfying meal.
Accompanying a sweet dessert.
Always in conversation.
A SIMPLE INDULGENCE
Doesn’t Need A Special Occasion For Validation.
Life – In The Moment – is enough.
When zest and vigour are wanting.
To recalibrate your day.
A warm smile.
Better With Company.
These days, I’m imbibing solo in the early morning.
I miss the breeze.
Cool or warm.
